To draw this Manga Boy Head and Face (Side View), follow the step-by-step drawings below. The new lines in each step are shown in red, so you'll know exactly what to draw next. Take your time and draw at your own pace.
Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don't press down too hard. For every step, sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake.
Step 1: Draw a big circle as a guide for the top of the manga boy's head. To draw the circle, first make four marks to determine the circle's height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. Space out the marks evenly at the beginning. The farther apart the marks are, the bigger the circle will be. If you're struggling to draw the circle, just trace the outer rim of a circular object like a bowl or a lid.
Step 2: On the lower, left side of the circle, draw an angled line for the lower half of the boy's head. Start with short, curved line that slopes to the left on the left edge of the circle. This will be the bridge of the nose. Below that, draw a longer vertical line that slopes to the right a bit for the side of the face. The last line at the bottom should curve back up to the circle to create the chin. Pay close attention to the angles of this line as well as the size and placement in relation to the circle.
Step 3: Half way between the top and bottom of the entire head, draw a long horizontal line as a construction guide that will help you place the manga boy's facial features later. If you'd like, you can use a ruler to help you find the halfway point of the head. Or you can just roughly estimate the halfway point that's slightly above the bridge of the nose.
Step 4: Below the head shape, draw two short lines as guides for the neck. Pay attention to where the lines start at the top in relation to the head. The line on the right should curve to the right at the top.
That's it for the guides! From this point on, press harder with your pencil for a more defined drawing.
Step 5: Inside the head, directly under the horizontal construction line, draw a curved line for the top part of the eye. The left side of this line should be thin and pointy while the right side should be thick. Below this line, on the right, draw an extra short, pointy line that slopes down and to the left for the side/bottom edge of the eye. Break up this line in the middle. Make sure the eye is close to the left edge of the circle, right above the guide for the nose.
Step 6: Inside the eye, on the left side, draw a thin oval for the boy's iris. The top part of the oval should touch the eye so that the shape is similar to the letter U. Inside the iris, draw a smaller, thin oval and shade it in for the pupil.
Step 7: On the top, right edge of the iris, draw a tiny circle for a highlight. Draw the circle directly over the edge of the iris. Above the eye, draw a curved horizontal line for the fold of the eyelid. To the left of the edge of the main circle, draw a pointy line for the visible part of the eyelashes of the eye on the other side of the head.
Step 8: Higher above the eye, draw a long, sloping line for the eyebrow. Boys eyebrows should be a little bit thicker than girl's eyebrows. Girls eyebrows are smooth but for this boy eyebrow, add a few tiny spike-like shapes on the left side to make the shape bushier. The right tip of the eyebrow should be thin. The right tip of the eyebrow should be very close to the edge of the initial circle.
Step 9: Darken the initial sloping line to the left of the head for the bridge of the nose. Angle the line inward to create the bottom edge of the nose. At the bottom, to the right, draw a tiny line for the nostril. Make the tip of the nose a bit angular.
Step 10: Below the nose draw a angled line for the top lip. Extend this line to the right to create the mouth. Curve the line for the mouth a bit and don't make it too long. Below that, draw a smaller, curved line for the lower lip. Keep the shape of the entire mouth and lips close to the side of the initial guide line on the left.
Step 11: Below the lower lip draw a long, curved line for the chin. Follow the path of the initial guide as you draw the line but draw the line lower the bottom. Continue to draw the line downward along the guide to create the throat. Give the line for the throat a bump for the Adam's apple.
Step 12: Below horizontal construction line, draw a big, curved for the ear. This line should be similar in shape to a backward letter C. The top of the ear should be wider than the bottom. The bottom of the ear should also be close to the bottom edge of the main circle. Inside the shape, draw a couple of curved lines for the inner structure of the ear. The top line should look similar to another letter C. The line in the middle should be similar to a greater-than sign (>).
Step 13: Inside the ear, draw a series of curved lines for more of the inner ear structure. These lines don't have to be perfect, just draw some short curved lines that are similar to the image for extra detail. You can also draw fewer lines and it would still look okay. Below the ear draw broken line along the initial guide line to emphasize the strong jaw.
Step 14: Darken the outer edges of the initial guides to create the shape of the head and back of the neck. The line for the neck on the right side is basically one long, continuous, curved line that ends at the bridge of the nose on the left side.
Final Step: For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guide lines. Don't worry about erasing all of the guides. It's okay to leave some behind. Erase the bit of the iris that's inside the tiny highlight circle. The highlight circle should be blank inside. Re-draw any final sketch lines you may have accidentally erased.
That's it! Keep practicing until you get the head and face right. Draw it again and again and eventually you'll get better!
